Devon’s biggest day of running has delivered a significant boost to Plymouth and regional charities, according to new research.
Britain’s Ocean City Running Festival, held in May, attracted 11,000 participants of all ages and abilities.
The festival featured the Plymouth Half Marathon, Plymouth 10K and the Plymouth Half Marathon Primary Schools’ Challenge, bringing together runners from across the region and beyond.
Organisers said runners and their families travelled from 660 towns and cities across the UK, generating nearly 1,200 overnight stays locally and an estimated £802,000 in spending.
An estimated 55,000 spectators gathered on The Hoe and along city streets, while participants have so far raised £500,000 for charity, with donations still coming in.
The event’s impact extended beyond health and wellbeing, with retailers, restaurants and visitor attractions reporting a busy weekend.
Plymouth City Council Cabinet Member Councillor Matt Smith, said: “Britain’s Ocean City Running Festival continues to demonstrate the significant economic value that major events bring to Plymouth. The festival supports local restaurants, cafés, shops and visitor attractions, providing a meaningful boost to businesses throughout the city.
Equally important is its reach, attracting participants and spectators from across the UK and beyond. This not only generates direct visitor spending but also showcases the very best of Britain’s Ocean City to thousands of people, strengthening Plymouth’s reputation as a vibrant destination for events, tourism and investment.”
Suzi Cumberland, managing director of event organisers Taurus Events Ltd, said the festival’s profile continued to rise.
She said: “The impact has been greater than ever, with two million social media views, 150,000 website visitors, and record numbers of participants and spectators. Our ambition is to take the event weekend to an even higher level in the years ahead.”
Building on this year’s success, organisers have confirmed that the Run Plymouth Half Marathon & 10K will return on Sunday, 16 May 2027.
